There's a reason so many of my paintings are set in "the Heartland" of America. In this place, the steady pulse of life beats across spreading fields, rustling animals, and daily routines. My watercolors, composed of unique viewpoints and narrative imagery, allow a viewer to see the mystery and beauty of the familiar. While the subject matter in my work speaks to familiar experience, the vibrant colors, rich textures and bold contrasts remind the viewer of the profoundness in these simple moments. My paintings celebrate the heart of being alive, the timeless story that we glimpse in the ordinary: a weathered barn braced against sky, restless clouds rolling across windswept grasses, cattle huddled under the branches of a cottonwood, or even a contemplative traveler pausing in an airport terminal.
Transparent watercolor is the dominant medium used in my paintings; its expressive and versatile qualities provide an infinite palette of possibilities. Incorporating charcoal, wax resist and India ink allows for added texture and sometimes gritty effects within my compositions. Through careful selection of subject, design and medium, my paintings connect the human heart to the life and beauty of our everyday landscapes - the “heartland” within all of us.
