Prairie Impressions

The Homestead Act transformed millions of acres of wild prairies into cultivated farmland, eliminating the once vast grasslands which supported great herds of bison, elk and other wildlife. Native prairie grasses comprise a delicate and adaptable ecosystem, able to withstand the harsh environments of draught, flood and extreme temperatures. Today, the tall grass prairie is the rarest of all major North American biomes and has become a focus for restoration and conservation efforts.

Many casual observers refer to the native prairie grasses as “weeds.” Upon closer inspection, the prairie comes alive with subtle colors and textures.
