The Groundbreakers
Driven by migration and westward expansion, pioneers and homesteaders reshaped the Great Plains in ways they could not fully foresee. Furrow by furrow, native prairies gave way to fields and pastures, creating the agricultural landscape that sustains us today. In the process, a complex, living ecosystem was dismantled, setting in motion lasting changes—soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and a transformation of the land that can never be fully undone.
