Triple digit temperatures are common for prairie summers.
Little relief from such extreme temperatures can be found on the prairie, except for the few sparse cottonwoods scattered throughout the landscape. Many times these trees were named and assigned their own distinct identity. All were known throughout the area for their distinct ability to give shade to both man and beast.
