Keeper of the Plains

This painting reflects the majesty and significance of the American bison—designated the National Mammal of the United States, a keystone species of the prairie ecosystem, and a culturally sacred animal to many Indigenous Nations.

In creating this piece, I wanted to honor the deep spiritual significance the bison holds within Lakota culture. I incorporated the symbolism of the medicine wheel, or Sacred Hoop, which represents the interconnectedness of all life, unity, and the four directions. Repeating this motif within the body of the bison and throughout the background reflects the continuous cycles of life and the enduring connections between all living things.
